Age of Empires II: Gold EditionThere are some video games that really hold up after time – you know, those games that are almost perfectly balanced and provide you with the same goodness over the years. For me, one of those games is Age of Empires II: Gold Edition. Not only does the gameplay hold up over time, it reminds me of the simpler days where 2-vs-2 death matches, text chat and post-game banter were the norm. But, the best part of playing 10+ year old games is that my 3-year-old MacBook with just 64MB of integrated video memory can play the game at 1680×1050 without a hitch!

Sure, online play is virtually non-existant anymore as GameRanger currently has just a few AoEII listings with rule acronyms that I no longer understand, but that’s not the point of a 10-year-old game. It’s all about playing as the Huns (no houses needed) and destroying moderately-set artificial intelligence as villagers are still collecting food! When I’m looking for a quick domination I use those river maps with a single choke point at which I build copious amounts of watch towers as my trebuchets roll through to destroy any and all buildings in sight!

Oh nostalgia…what will you bring me next…perhaps another go-around with Morrowind in anticipation of Skyrim, or even some offline Tropico while I puff away on my dictator-approved cigar. You can say “those were the days”, but you know what? Those can still be the days!

Time to rush some unsuspecting AI opponents…be sure to comment on your gaming memories below!

Ahh, the good old days of AOE 1.
I just put the disc back in my high-end pc, lovely how those villagers start building some kind of temple while you’re waiting for the game to install. And the sound effects, amazing! WOLOLO!
